AL-DAKHLA OASIS
The green oasis with sprawling agricultural lands
Ancient commercial activity in the area led Al-Dakhla to be enriched with temples, fortresses, a necropolis, and villages that have withstood the test of time. In between treks in the surrounding desert, you will definitely want to make time to explore these fascinating ancient sites, many of which are remarkably preserved.
Necropolis of al-Muzawwaqa
Located 37 km north of the village of Mut, which includes hundreds of Roman tombs, including two very well-preserved painted ones.
Qila al-Dabba Necropolis and Ain Asil
In the village of Balat, the former Old Kingdom capital of Al-Dakhla and the oldest excavated village of Ancient Egypt. It contains the well-preserved remains of a settlement and a monumental necropolis of the 6th Dynasty.
Deir al-Hagar Temple
Deir al-Hagar Temple, a recently restored, impressively preserved site where you can see scenes of Egyptian gods and the signature cartouches of the four Roman rulers who built it.
Ezbet Bashendi
A mud-brick village that has been inhabited since the 11th century, with houses that have a uniquely curvy design and charmingly decorated walls.
